It is my great pleasure to announce, on Administrative Professional Day (of all days), that our LMC Advisor, Amanda Blocker, has been selected to receive the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts 2021 Buzz Award for Excellence in Student Service! Her nominators write:
“Even during COVID, Amanda has worked hard to improve the daily lives of students, whether they are logging on from their childhood bedrooms or a dormitory room on campus. She has reached out to students who were having trouble because of unreliable WiFi, and she has continued to work to improve undergraduate offerings as we work to develop both new courses and new minors.
An English major as an undergraduate, Amanda has adapted to Georgia Tech and has proven herself to be adept with software and data. As a result, the rest of us are working to propose new classes and new minors (including a panoply of film offerings and the new Black Media Studies minor that will shortly go before the IUCC). She even attracted the attention of Provost Potts, who recognized her contribution to AdvisorLink, a program designed to schedule and train advisors across campus. Because I was unaware of her contribution here, I quote from Potts' e-mail: "Information systems like this are only successful if they meet the users' real needs, and understanding those needs requires the kind of engagement you demonstrated." If I was unaware of Amanda's contribution to AdvisorLink, I became aware yesterday of her work on the search committee that hired Kyle Poe as a career educator. Once again, her awareness of student need helped her to recommend someone who will meet the needs of our students. I also know of her work to recruit the next class of students as she works on FASET, ShadowDay, and other recruitment strategies/programs. ... In short, she has kept the faces and needs of students before our eyes.”
“Amanda Blocker is a fantastic advisor and a critical part of the LMC community. She provides outstanding support and advice to students across the many programs housed within LMC and plays an important role for advocating for the interests of undergraduates within the school.”
Amanda will receive the award at the Ivan Allen College Awards Ceremony on April 28.
