New historical survey of medievalism studies

Updated: Dec 22, 2023

Dear colleagues in the vineyard of medievalism:

What better way to celebrate the holidays than with a recent essay surveying the field of medievalism studies. The field clearly has arrived when it is becoming the subject of historiography.  Recently published, and available for free reading if you subscribe to the site (can be done in a few minutes):

Ionuț Costea. "MEDIEVALISM. HISTORIOGRAPHIC MARKERS". Studia Universitatis Babes-Bolyai - Historia 1:131-160. Updates David Matthews' book, Medievalism. A Critical History (Brewer, 2017), Berit Kjærulff's overview, "Medievalism and the Post-Medieval Middle Ages," Orbis Litterarum 73 (2018): 458–70, and Richard Marsden's "Medievalism: New discipline or scholarly no-man's land?" History Compass 16/2 (2018).

Happy reading, and happy holidays!
